Recently I attended a major networking conference. While the sessions were great, the real value happened afterward over dinner and a few drinks. During those conversations, one topic kept surfacing.
What does the future look like for network engineers?
Is networking becoming irrelevant? Will AI replace us? What skills should we be investing in to stay relevant over the next decade?
I’ve been hearing versions of these questions for years.
The reality is that the networking profession has never stood still. Over the past decade we’ve evolved from routing and switching to cloud, automation, security, zero trust, and SASE. The role has continuously expanded.
Now we are entering another major transition.
Agentic AI is beginning to change how networks are designed, operated, secured, and optimized. Tasks that once took hours can now be completed in minutes. AI can analyze telemetry, identify anomalies, suggest policy changes, and help troubleshoot problems faster than ever before.
Does that mean network engineers are going away?
Not a chance.
But it does mean the skills that create value are changing again.
Here are the five skills I believe will matter most for networking professionals over the next several years.
1. Security architecture
For years, many network engineers viewed security as someone else’s responsibility. Those days are over.
As organizations continue down the path toward SASE and zero trust, networking professionals must understand identity, segmentation, policy, and risk. The network is no longer just moving packets from point A to point B. It has become a critical enforcement point for security.
What’s changed? The rise of machine identities and AI agents. Increasingly, networks won’t just be connecting users and applications. They’ll be connecting autonomous systems making decisions and taking actions on behalf of users.
Understanding how to securely connect all of those entities while maintaining least-privilege access will become a foundational skill.
2. Automation and AI
A few years ago, I would have told every network engineer to learn Python, APIs, and Infrastructure as Code.
I still believe that.
But automation is evolving.
Today, AI can help analyze performance issues, review configurations, identify risks, and even recommend changes. Tomorrow, AI agents will be performing many of those tasks automatically.
The question is no longer whether you can automate.
The question is whether you know how to use AI effectively.
Can you ask the right questions?
Can you validate the answers?
Can you recognize when the recommendation is wrong?
The engineers who learn to work alongside AI will dramatically outperform those who ignore it.
3. Cloud and application awareness
Networks no longer exist in a data center.
Applications are spread across clouds, SaaS platforms, branch offices, remote users, and increasingly AI services. Understanding routing protocols alone won’t help you solve many of today’s performance problems.
Network engineers need to understand how applications communicate, how users consume services, and how data moves across increasingly distributed environments.
The professionals who understand both networking and applications will be significantly more valuable than those who focus solely on infrastructure.
4. Data analytics and critical thinking
One thing AI will not replace is judgment.
Modern networking platforms generate massive amounts of telemetry. AI can help identify patterns and point engineers toward probable root causes, but someone still has to determine whether the conclusion makes sense.
Critical thinking becomes more important as AI becomes more capable.
The best engineers won’t be the ones staring at dashboards all day. They’ll be the ones who can quickly separate signal from noise, challenge assumptions, and make good decisions based on the available data.
5. Communication and business alignment
This may be the most important skill on the list.
As technology becomes more automated, communication becomes more valuable.
Can you explain risk to an executive?
Can you justify an investment?
Can you connect a technical decision to a business outcome?
Can you influence people outside your own team?
The engineers who can communicate effectively will continue to advance regardless of how much technology changes around them.
Final thoughts
Back to the conversations I had over dinner.
When people asked whether networking was disappearing, my answer was simple.
No.
Networking remains one of the most important disciplines in technology. In fact, as organizations embrace SASE, zero trust, cloud, and AI, the role is becoming even more strategic.
The future won’t belong to the engineer who knows the most commands.
It won’t belong to the engineer who writes the most scripts.
It will belong to the engineer who combines strong technical fundamentals with security expertise, business awareness, and the ability to use AI as a force multiplier.
The technology will continue to change.
The opportunity has never been bigger.
